Uncontrolled and unexpected car acceleration:  What do I do?  

1. Ensure your foot is away from the accelerator. Sometimes in the heat of the moment, one may accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake.
2. Maintain control of the steering wheel.
3. Shift the transmission into neutral. The engine may rev pretty high, but will not transfer that energy to the wheels.
4. Steer the vehicle toward the shoulder or a safe area away from traffic.
5. Turn the vehicle off. Wait until the vehicle is at least out of traffic as there will be no power steering or power brakes when the ignition is off.
